Lyttelton SAPS gearing up for festive season
Jewellery stores, perfume stores, cellphone and clothing stores are usually targeted in malls.
With the festive season around the corner, Lyttelton police say so-called “high police visibility operations” would be held regularly to protect citizens.
“This time of the year sees a lot of robberies taking place especially around malls,” said Lyttelton police spokesperson Captain Dave Miller.
Jewellery stores, perfume stores, cellphone and clothing stores were usually targeted.
Miller said shoppers should always be vigilant and aware of their surroundings at all times.
“If you are at a mall and there’s an armed robbery taking place, then please comply with security personnel’s instructions. We do from time to time have drills with the security companies to make sure that the evacuation plans are up to scratch. They have their contingency plans in place, so please comply and you’ll be safe.”
He said police would also hold foot patrols inside malls.
Miller also urged parents to make sure that their children are safe when left alone at home, especially during the December holidays.
“We have seen a sharp increase in property-related crimes such as housebreaking. Parents who leave their children home alone should always communicate with them. If anyone is visiting or doing maintenance work, inform them and check up on them regularly.”

He said the teams have already been assembled in different areas around Lyttelton policing areas to combat crime.
“We will be working in conjunction with CPFs as well as various security companies we have a close working relationship with.
“There will be quite a few projects we will be running from our social crime prevention desk in terms of crime awareness tips.”
