Cops warn against ‘bank followers’
“Any and everybody should avoid withdrawing large sums of money and not just during the festive season."
Pretoria North police have cautioned members of the public against withdrawing large sums of money due to ‘bank followers’ as the festive season draws closer.
“As the festive season approaches, we urge people to refrain from withdrawing large sums of money as there are people following victims from banks,” police spokesperson Sergeant Tsakani Miyen said.
This as stokvel groups and social clubs geared up to share money which they had saved up throughout the year.
“We urge people to opt for the money transferred into their accounts directly, instead of them withdrawing the money,” she said.
Miyen noted that this did not only apply to stokvel groups and social clubs.
“Any and everybody should avoid withdrawing large sums of money and not just during the festive season,” she said.
In September, three people were arrested in the Sinoville policing precinct following an armed robbery at a business premises in the Doornpoort area.
The trio robbed an employee at the business premises shortly after his arrival from withdrawing an undisclosed amount of money at a bank in the Montana area.
The money was said to have been intended to pay workers.
While three of the robbers were arrested, one of their accomplices evaded arrest by fleeing the scene on foot.
Last year, three robbers who allegedly followed their victims to and from banks around the Gauteng province were arrested in the Centurion policing precinct.
