Traffic operations to be intensified as another BMW speedster caught

This comes as the Gauteng traffic police arrested five drivers last month, with a 41-year-old male driver caught driving a BMW M4 at 216km/h on a road with a prescribed maximum limit of 120km/h.”

The Gauteng traffic police will ensure that high speed operations are intensified in an effort to enhance road safety after five more drivers were arrested for excessively speeding in the key routes of the province.

In a statement the authority said suspects were arrested on Wednesday.

The operations were conducted on various Gauteng major routes and freeways such as the N4 freeway from Pretoria to Mpumalanga, the N14 freeway from Pretoria to Krugersdorp, the N1 Pretoria to Johannesburg and the R21 freeway from Pretoria to OR Tambo International Airport.

“Among the arrested suspects was a 44-year-old male driver who was caught excessively driving a BMW 318i at 216km/h on a prescribed maximum limit of 120km/h along the N4 freeway from Pretoria towards Mpumalanga,” the statement read.

It said the suspect was detained in Bronkhortspruit police station pending a bail hearing application.

The GTP said all the other suspects were expected to appear at various magistrate’s courts to face charges relating to reckless and negligent driving with an alternative charge of driving a vehicle exceeding the prescribed speed maximum limit of 120km/h.

“The speedsters were driving at an excess speed of over 160km/h.”

Gauteng traffic police spokesperson Sello Maremane said: “Driving at excessive speed is one of the common causes of road crashes resulting in fatalities.

“The Gauteng traffic police would like to appeal to motorists to abide by the general speed limit of 120km/h on Gauteng major routes. Anyone found endangering the lives of innocent road users by excessively driving will be severely punished.”

This comes as last month the Gauteng traffic police high speed unit arrested five drivers who had been over the speed limits prescribed by law.

Maremane said the five were busted on the N4 Pretoria to Mpumalanga and N1 Pretoria to Johannesburg.

“Many Gauteng motorists were recently found driving in excess of the prescribed speed limits.

“It is unfortunate that when we continue with our efforts to save the lives of road users, there are drivers who are hell-bent on violating road traffic rules and regulations. All drivers found disobeying the rules of our roads and continue to conduct themselves with impunity will be severely punished.”
