‘Little superman’ Teagan (4) loses fight against cancer
“He fought a hard long battle. He fought extra hard in his last moments this morning.”
Teagan van Wyk, fondly referred to as little superman, lost his lengthy battle against cancer on Tuesday.
“It is with heavy hearts that we have to inform you all that at 12:20 today, our little superman hung up his cape and took up his wings,” the four-year-old’s mother Maggie said.
“He fought a hard long battle. He fought extra hard in his last moments this morning.” The toddler was initially diagnosed with neuroblastoma cancer in 2018, and underwent chemotherapy, major surgery, radiation and maintenance, amongst other treatments. However, in October 2020, he relapsed and once unsuccessful, all treatment was stopped. At that time, Maggie confirmed some changes in his lymph nodes had doctors worried.
Teagan had completed chemotherapy after being diagnosed with neuroblastoma and receiving treatment at Steve Biko academic hospital in August 2020.
He proudly rang the bell to symbolise the completion of his therapy alongside eight other patients battling other forms of childhood cancer. Once Teagan was cleared of cancer, his family moved from Pretoria North to Ermelo for a fresh start and new job opportunities.
But after a recent routine check-up with his doctors, the family travelled back to Pretoria for further tests, including an MRI and biopsy. At the time of his death, the young warroir was in palliative care at home.
