CBD police send a stern warning to curfew breakers

"Nightclubs and taverns close at 23:00, but clubgoers tend to go to other private places to continue drinking well into the night.”

Pretoria Central is concerned about the large number of people breaking the curfew rules.

“This is a constant problem we have especially on weekends,” said Pretoria Central police spokesperson Constable Thabang Nkhumise.

“Nightclubs and taverns close at 23:00, but clubgoers tend to go to other private places to continue drinking well into the night,” he said.

Nkhumise said the police mandate was to patrol the streets at night and ensure that there is compliance.

“On weekends, we have high-density operations that sorely concentrate on adherence in terms of the disaster management act,” he said.

Nkhumise said police were working with the CPF and various businesses to curb crime and ensure that illegal spots are identified.

“As the festive season is fast approaching it is always mandatory to ensure we create awareness campaigns and engage with the community.”

Over the weekend, five people were arrested on different occasions for non-compliance in terms of the disaster management act after they were found roaming the streets after curfew hours.

“The five did not provide the police with valid reasons on why they were in the streets in those early hours,” Nkhumise said.

“It is still mandatory that the community follow the rules and regulations set by the government even on alert level 1.”

The Pretoria Central acting station commander JP Maboe condemned such behavioural patterns saying it was important for citizens to abide by the law and follow precautionary measures to avoid the spread of Covid-19.

“With the restrictions being eased it is important for every individual to wear masks, keep socially distancing, sanitise, and refrain from illegal activities,” she said.

Should there be any illegal activities taking place in your surroundings do not hesitate to contact the hotline on 08600 10111 or alternatively dial 112 on your cellphone to report crime and non-compliance.
