Nkuna said the robbers took a staff member and ordered her to lead them to the safe, where they found the other staff member in the safe.
“They ordered both staff members to take out the boxed cellphones, of a variety of brands. which the store kept in the safe.
“The two staff members were then instructed to wrap the cellphones in a blanket, also belonging to Pep Stores. The staff members followed their instructions and the suspects left with the cellphones and the money.”
Nkuna said the amount of money involved was not known at this stage.
“As they were walking out, however,” Nkuna said, “one of the staff members, informed the mall’s security of the robbery in progress, and alerted the awaiting security officers to the suspects.
“Security officers were on them as they walked towards the exit, and they dropped the blanket with the cellphones and got away with the money only.”
The cellphones were recovered, but police could not recover the money and the get-away car, Nkuna said.
