Centurion hero for November

“Although she works in the Billing Department of the hospital, Magda is known among patients, their family members, colleagues and friends alike, for walking the extra mile. Especially since the onset of Covid.”

Magda Theron from Lyttelton is Centurion’s Hero of the Month for November.

West Pack Lifestyle and Centurion Rekord want to honour those who stand out, who give without expecting anything in return and who put the needs of others before their own.

Magda Theron has been working at Netcare Unitas Hospital for the past eight years, first as a nurse and now in the billing department.

“We strive to always deliver excellent service, and I believe I’m only doing my job,” a very surprised and modest Theron said.

“Being honoured as a hero, was a huge surprise and a huge compliment,” she said.

“To engage with people around one, who are in need, I believe comes naturally to me due to the hardship I had to endure myself,” said Theron, adding that she believed the seeds of any hero’s heroic qualities had been sown on their life path before the challenges they have to face, whether it be Covid-19 or not, that pressurised it into bloom.

“I, therefore, believe we all can be surrounded by heroes daily in our everyday life if we all diligently focus on the needs of those around us.

“Sometimes it is such little effort, but joy is always the reward I enjoy for giving without expecting anything in return.”

Theron said there had been heartache and disappointment she had had to endure, as one could not always do as one pleased.

“I, therefore, feel deep compassion and empathy for sad people, those in pain. It comes naturally to me to help carry that burden.

“We might not always have a lot, but we sure do always have enough. The Lord always provides, He is all that we cannot go without. I teach my children to pray every morning for wisdom and insight, and to thank the Lord every evening for what they have.”

A colleague said Theron always put those she was helping first.

“Although she works in the billing department of the hospital now, Magda is known among patients, their family members, colleagues and friends alike, for walking the extra mile, especially since the onset of Covid-19,” said Bianca Wehmeyer, a friend of Theron.

“She has an open hand and an open heart. She always helps with whatever, and wherever, help is needed”, said her colleague, Elzani Pattinson.

“She is especially known for supporting those around her with her friendly, positive energy. She is always smiling, encouraging, advising, comforting and assisting others. And that is everyone who crosses her path basically.

“Especially with Covid that has been taking its toll, Magda has been a pillar of strength in many lives she touched and touches. When people get close to her especially, I believe there is nothing she wouldn’t do for them,” said Pattinson.
