Sidewalk trophies get new owners for 2022
“A proud owner always has a neat sidewalk – you have to be proud to be able to say that we live in Capital Park.
The floating trophies for the most prestigious sidewalk competition of the month got their first homes for 2022.
This month’s trophies can be seen in Venter Street and Sixth Avenue in Capital Park, respectively.
Lizelle Stemmett has lived in one of the houses where one of the trophies now stands since 1996.
She says she would not have been eligible for the award if it had not been for her right-hand man and gardener, David Khoza.
“Without David, I am completely lost,” she said.
“He has been working for me for the past 20 years or so. David is part of my family.”
Stemmett said that she leaves everything in Khoza’s capable hands when it comes to gardening.
“I would help out now and then.
“Every piece of grass and plant is our hard work.
“David keeps everything neat. I missed him terribly during the strict Covid-19 lockdown.”
According to Stemmett, however, she never thought the trophy would now stand in front of her yard.
“As I drive through the area I would see the trophy and then I would think, ‘Wow! It looks flashy’. It’s a great idea the organisers came up with.
“I gave the small trophy to David. He is so proud of it.
“I have to practically bribe him in the afternoons to go home. He will not go home until he has done everything he planned for the day.
“We love being busy in the garden. Everything that David tackles, he tackles with devotion.
“It is an honour and a privilege to have such a hard-working man by my side.”

Jan Steyn-Greef, the other winner, has lived in Capital Park for the past nine years.
“Unfortunately, I did not grow up in the area. Capital Park is still close to my heart though,” said Steyn-Greef.
He mentioned that he never thought one of the organisers would knock on his front door to congratulate him on his sidewalk.
He thanked his gardener, Elvis Shaba, for his hard work.
“Not only is he busy in the garden, but he also does all the housework.”
Both residents said that the trophy meant a lot to them.
“A proud owner always has a neat sidewalk – you have to be proud to be able to say that we live in Capital Park.
“This competition encourages other residents to get involved in the initiative. There is no reason why the trophy cannot stand in front of your yard any time soon. Be proud of your surroundings.”
Caprra (Capital Park Residents and Ratepayers Association) Michael Burt and Real One Real Estate’s Donne-li Johnson were behind the recent handing over.
