Police nab 350 in rainy weekend, more firearms recovered

A red glove was found in a plastic bag along with two R5 rifle ammunition and five 9mm live ammunition.

Heavy rains over the weekend did not deter Tshwane central police from making over 350 arrests during operations.

Acting district commissioner Brigadier Samuel Thine, together with SAPS senior management and other law enforcement agencies, led various operations from Thursday evening to the early hours of Sunday.

These operations included roadblocks, stop-and-searches, foot patrols, tracing of wanted suspects, compliance inspections at second-hand goods dealers, and raids at liquor outlets.

Pretoria Central police spokesperson Captain Augustinah Selepe said 11 liquor outlets were shut down in Tshwane for failure to comply with the Liquor Act, she said.

Twenty-two people were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol while 52 illegal immigrants were detained for contravening the Immigration Act, she said.

The other 250 or so suspects were arrested during operations and raids in the district.

In one of the major successes, the Mamelodi crime prevention members swiftly acted on the information received on a suspect believed to be in possession of dangerous weapons, said Selepe.

“Police went to the location given and searched the suspects where he was found in possession of a firearm. A red glove was found in a plastic bag along with two R5 rifle ammunition and five 9mm live ammunition,” she said.

Brigadier Thine commended senior management and the heads of other law enforcement agencies for the “integrated approach towards fighting crime”.

“The main idea of these operations is to deter crime and improve the quality of life and personal safety of all people in Tshwane so that they can feel safe and secure,” he said.
