Failure to restore power leaves large parts of Tshwane without water

As soon as repairs to the transformer are completed, it will enable Rand Water to return to full capacity.

Large parts of Tshwane have been left without water following a Rand Water power failure since Sunday, February 6.

The water utility’s Mapleton booster experienced power supply failure on Sunday, which have affected the Vlakfontein reservoir that supplies water to parts of Gauteng.

“On Monday, Rand Water anticipated repairs of the transformer, but it was unsuccessful. As a result, the Mapleton station remains on 58% pumping capacity (430ml per day) until further notice,” said metro spokesperson Selby Bokaba.

He said the transformer failed during testing and could not be commissioned.

“This limited power supply from the substation has resulted in declining levels of two additional Rand Water reservoirs, namely Selcourt and Bronberg.

“As soon as repairs to the transformer are completed, it will enable Rand Water to return to full capacity. They urge all consumers to continue using water sparingly,” Bokaba said.
