Thatchfield residents take their anger to the streets

Residents from Thatchfield had been without electricity since Tuesday morning. Some areas don’t have water either.

Thatchfield residents burnt tyres and blocked roads in Centurion on Wednesday to protest poor service delivery, and more specifically power outages.

Various complaints were received by the Tshwane metro from residents about power outages experienced in Thatchfield, Laudium and The Reeds.

According to DA member Sean Cox, who took part in the protest action, residents from Thatchfield had been without electricity since Tuesday morning.

“People are upset that the metro was not repairing the power failure,” he said.

“Only three of the seven estates in the area have power.”

Metro spokesperson, Lindela Mashigo said power outages are being experienced in regions 1 and 4.

He said the ongoing illegal strike action by metro staff members and intimidation by some employees was hampering service delivery.

“We have a massive backlog in these areas and it is currently being addressed on the highest level,” Mashigo said.

“We also have challenges with some of the metro’s staff members that are striking illegally.

“The metro sent a stern warning of disciplinary action that will be taken against the perpetrators should they not comply.”

Mashigo said a team that was sent to attend to the power problems in the area, but was intimidated by the protestors.

“Some areas don’t have water either.”

Mashigo said the metro summoned the TMPD to assist them with the protestors, adding that the metro will return to solving problems as soon as the turmoil has calmed down.

Rekord reported earlier the municipality entered a two-day service delivery disruption due to the illegal and unprotected strike by its staff members.

Striking workers blocked non-striking employees from going to work.
