Rietgat police destroy several litres of confiscated alcohol

"No illegal liquor outlet will operate under my watch, the party is over."

Police destroyed several litres of confiscated alcohol following the closure of various illegal shebeens in Soshanguve.

The liquor, totalling 1 147 litres, was confiscated by Rietgat police in block T, Soshanguve, and destroyed at the Atteridgeville police station.

Rietgat police spokesperson Captain Stephen Maluleka said the alcohol was confiscated during police search-and-seizure operations in January at illegal shebeens as part of the closing of illegal liquor outlets in their policing area.

Maluleka said some of these illegal shebeens are “crime generators” and in the process suffocates legal outlets within the area.

“Cases of dealing in liquor without a valid licence have been opened against various illegal shebeen owners.

“A strong message has been sent out by the station commander.”

Rietgat police spokesperson Brigadier Molatelo Maphoto said illegal dealings are a thing of the past.

“No illegal liquor outlet will operate under my watch – the party is over,” said Brig Maphoto.

“I would further like to send a strong message to those who are illegally operating or those who are planning to operate illegally to drop that idea until they are legally compliant – or feel the full might of the law.”
