Elderly woman robbed of belongings after suspects gain access through gate

Little did she know that the two men were distracting her while a third man was going through her handbag.

An elderly Eersterust woman was robbed of her cellphone, ID document, bank cards and R2 900 of cash after three men entered her yard.

The incident happened on Thursday, March 31 at around 11:56 in Crawford Avenue, Eersterust.

Eleanor Leyds (51) was in the kitchen when she saw two men entering the premises through the front gate.

“The house was being fumigated and we had to wait outside for a while. My son-in-law just left and five minutes later, a Tuk Tuk parked outside.

“The men asked me where my son-in-law was. I told them that he had just left for work. I was not suspicious at all because I thought they might be his friends,” she said.

Little did she know that the two men were distracting her while a third man was going through her handbag, which she had left in the garden outside because of the fumigation.

“I was just about to fetch my handbag outside when the men arrived.”

The men then fled.

She added she was relieved no one was hurt.

“I do not know what they might be capable of. It could have been so much worse.

“Luckily, the whole incident was caught on camera.”

The family opened a case of theft at the Eersterust police station on Monday.

According to police spokesperson Sergeant Sam Shibambo, they were investigating the incident.

He appealed to anyone who might know the suspects’ whereabouts to contact the police on 082 822 8337 or Eersterust SAPS on 060 882 1711.
