East tavern owner arrested, liquor confiscated

Liquor to the value of R4 000 was confiscated by police.

A 39-year-old man was arrested in Cullinan for illegally operating a tavern, and liquor to the value of R4 000 was confiscated by police.

The man was arrested following a tip-off they got from a member of the public during a gender-based violence (GBV) awareness operation, said police spokesperson Sergeant Connie Moganedi.

The awareness campaign was attended by Cullinan police sector managers and a “victim-friendly” room was set up at extension 9, Refilwe.

“A group of community members were gathered and told of the negative impact of GBV and things that contribute towards it such as taverns,” said Moganedi.

Moganedi said police investigated and later arrested the man for contravention of section 127(a) of the Gauteng Liquor Act 2 of 2003.

“The team was thanked for their efforts,” she said.

Moganedi encouraged community members to maintain a good relationship with the police and to continue reporting any suspicious-looking persons to the police by contacting 08600 10 111.

The suspect was due to appear in court soon.
