Family distraught after discovery of a gunned down body reveals it’s their missing son

By the time Khomane was found, he had been reported missing by his family. He was last seen driving a car on Saturday evening.

Police are investigating the murder of a 25-year-old man who was found dead by cow herders in a bush in Hammanskraal.

A Hammanskraal family is distraught after their son Khomane Nasetta Baloyi’s body was found in the Eersterust F4 veld near Vumakloof informal settlement on Monday afternoon.

“We found him lying in the bushes with a gunshot wound and a cartridge next to him,” Hammanskraal Temba police spokesperson Sergeant Herman Moremi said.

He said the police were investigating a case of murder following the gruesome discovery.

“The motive of the killing is unknown.”

At the time, Baloyi was found he had been reported missing by his family. He was last seen driving a car on Saturday evening.

Moremi said the police did not find a car at the crime scene.

“This will form part of the investigation.”

Khomane and his mother Maropeng Depangkga

Baloyi’s heartbroken mother, Maropeng Depanykga, confirmed to Rekord that the body found in the bushes was her son’s.

His family had been searching for him since Saturday at around 23:00. When they couldn’t find him, the desperate family opened a missing person case.

Speaking to Rekord on Monday before the tragic news, his brother Given Baloyi said their mother last saw Baloyi on Friday morning when she was going to work and the little brother saw him on Friday afternoon.

“Mum communicated with him via WhatsApp from Friday and the last communication was on Saturday at around 13:00,” he said.

Given said the last person who saw Baloyi was his friend from Hammanskraal with whom he exchanged cars.

“He [Baloyi] had just dropped off the friend’s mum and then asked to borrow the car to go run a few errands of his own. He also left his car at the friend’s place,” he said.

Given said his little brother never slept out, which raised fears for the family when he went missing.

“He usually sleeps at home, even when he goes out he comes back and sleeps at home.

“He hasn’t slept anywhere else.”
