Busy intersection in north finally gets traffic lights
The traffic light will be erected at the intersection of 3rd Avenue and Dr Swanepoel Street, Montana Gardens.
Residents from Montana Gardens, in the north of Pretoria, can look forward to a set of traffic lights being installed at a busy intersection, after it was requested 18 years ago.
The traffic lights will be installed at the intersection of 3rd Avenue and Dr Swanepoel Street, said ward 5 councillor Arnold van Niekerk.
“These traffic lights were requested 18 years ago. Now, after all these years of fights and petitions, there is good news for road users.”
Van Niekerk said municipal officials met with developers in the area recently to discuss the need to have traffic regulated by using a set of traffic lights at that intersection.
“Negotiations went well and role players decided to co-operate and support the request. We all have a common goal in that we seek the best interest of the community and wish to promote safety at all times.”
Van Niekerk said on Tuesday he was delighted to announce that the contractor started work already and that it was expected to be completed no later than the end of June.
The ward consists of Montana, Montana Gardens, Montana Park and a small part of Sinoville.
“We have a problem with potholes in the ward and the metro has started with repairs.”
“We also have challenges concerning illegal land occupants along Sefako Makgatho Drive, as well as in the area of Dr Swanepoel Street. Local police and TMPD often assist in that respect.”
Van Niekerk said that includes illegal occupants sleeping in public parks, especially after hours and on weekends and holidays.
“At the moment we focus on cutting grass and cleaning parks, as well as clearing stormwater canals.
“I am also glad to mention that the metro’s response time to repair streetlights has improved considerably.”
