30 000 day-old broiler chicks distributed among Winterveldt farmers

“The farmers have also received broiler feeds and refresher training.”

Local farmers in Winterveldt received some much-needed support this week when the Tshwane metro, together with various other government departments, donated 30 000 day-old broiler chicks for broiler production.

The broiler chicks will be distributed to farmers via the Winterveldt farmer production support units (FPSU), according to environment and agriculture management MMC Alderma Katlego Mathebe.

“Currently, 18 smallholder farmers have received the chicks, with 16 more farmers to get their share within the next few days.

“The farmers have also received broiler feeds and refresher training,” she said.

Mathebe said the units aim to provide farmers with access to good quality inputs, mechanisation and extension support, training, logistics, primary produce collection and marketing intelligence.

“This is an initiative under the farmer production support unit and a component of the national Agri-parks programme.

Agri-parks is a programme implemented to kick-start rural economic transformation in identified rural regions countrywide.

“It has three components, which are the FSPUs, the Agri-hub and the rural marketing centre.

“Tshwane’s traditional Agri-parks such as Rooiwal and Kleinsonderhoudt are classified as FPSUs,” she said.

Mathebe said the farmers will support the Winterveldt chicken abattoir, which is already operational.
