Graffiti warns north motorists of ditch in the road

“A newly built block of flats needed to be connected to the system by laying cables thus the ditch through the road.”

Graffiti on a traffic barrier this week warned Pretoria North residents of a “moerse gat” (huge hole) in Jan van Riebeeck Street.

According to ward councillor Yolanda Duvenage, the hole was actually a ditch dug by contractors extending electricity to a nearby building.

“A newly-built block of flats needed to be connected to the system by laying cables, thus the ditch through the road.

“The contractor has, however, not covered and repaired the ditch properly after the cables were connected.”

Duvenage said she received several complaints and reported it to the roads and transport department, who referred her to the water department, stating it was a water leak.

The water department then referred her to the electrical department.

“The metro is aware of the ditch which will be addressed in due time.

“There are also two rather big potholes I wish to warn residents about and urge them to drive carefully in that area.”

High on her priority list, she said, were the potholes on the corner of President Steyn and Jan van Riebeeck streets, and the corner of Deetlefs and President Steyn streets in Wolmer.

She urged residents to be patient as the metro starts repairing potholes.

They, however, still faced a huge backlog.

“Due to the heavy rains we have had during the rainy season, it was too wet to repair potholes. The impact of the recent municipal strike has also hampered service delivery considerably.”
