Metro adds 25 000 new books to local libraries

The books were distributed across the 62 public libraries in the metro.

The Tshwane metro received 25 000 books from local writers and publishers to distribute to public libraries across Pretoria.

Peggy de Bruin, the MMC for Social Development and Community Services, said almost 4 000 of the books were received from local authors.

De Bruin said the metro planned to increase the number of books from local authors in libraries.

“The promotion of local authors is one of our drivers to give more exposure to indigenous authors and languages.

“I would like to encourage residents to make use of our facilities and use the opportunity to unlock their creative, vocabulary and reading skills,” De Bruin said.

She said the books will be distributed across 62 libraries around Tshwane.

De Bruin said the metro’s libraries are equipped with resources and facilities that make accessing magazines and newspapers easier.

She added that the metro aimed to provide resources and services such as Overdrive and Press Reader.

“Libraries contribute to the United Nation’s sustainable development goals, which promote the inclusion of access to information.

“Our libraries contribute towards making an informed and literate society. We call on residents to get their

De Bruin said the metro plans to continue supplying books to libraries across Tshwane.
