AfriForum Groter-Moot set to combat crime in area during weekly operations

"Drug addicts, drug trade and prostitution are becoming a major problem in the Moot area."

AfriForum Groter-Moot’s neighbourhood watch held its weekly team operation on Sunday evening when its Team Pitbull undertook a visibility foot patrol in De Moot-Suidspruit.

They started on 20th Avenue and patrolled through to Voortrekker Road.

The neighbourhood watch was called to an accident scene on the corner of 9th Avenue and Lombard Street at around 21:30.

“Upon arrival, it was discovered the driver of a white Hyundai Getz had collided with a municipal water pipe. Ambulance services were called to the scene. Fortunately, the driver did not sustain any serious injuries,” said Andries Opperman, a team member of AfriForum Groter-Moot.

Opperman said that their primary purpose during operations is to create visibility and provide response and assistance where needed.

Drug addicts, drug trade and prostitution are becoming a major problem in the Moot area.

“AfriForum has also received numerous incidents of theft of motor vehicles and gate motor theft,” said Opperman.

Together with the weekly operations, clean-up campaigns take place monthly.

“The grass is overgrown which makes an easy hiding place for criminals.

“Once criminals flee into the bushes, it is almost impossible to locate them,” he said.

Opperman added that the visibility operations have been very successful in terms of making the Moot a safer place.

“We want to create a safer environment for the community and we need to take action to combat crime in the area,” he said.
