Atteridgeville family loses everything in shack fire
According to the family, the fire was started by a fault from the electricity meter box inside the shack.
An Atteridgeville family is in dire need of any kind of help after their home burned down on Wednesday morning.
According to the family, the fire seemed to have started due to an electrical fault on the electricity meter box inside their shack.
One of the family members, Lindiwe Maiko said everything including phones, identity documents and other important items was lost in the fire.
“The owner of the shack is my cousin, everything burned during the fire.
Maiko said he only has clothes he was wearing on that day.
“We did not manage to save anything and what hurts me the most is the fact that he [his cousin] is left with nothing.
“At the time of the fire, he had taken tools he borrowed from a neighbour to clean his yard. We think the fire was started by a fault in the electricity meter box,” said Maiko.
“No one was in the house when it happened.”
Maiko said the family didn’t know what they were going to do.
“In the meantime, my cousin will stay with me but we don’t know what we will do in terms of clothes.
Maiko’s cousin, Sithembiso Butheluzi, said the reality of losing everything in the fire had not yet sunk in.
“I still cannot believe that it happened and I don’t know what I am going to do.”
Community leader Samuel Masilela said they will provide the family with food and also help them rebuild the structure.
“We will start by cleaning here and we will speak to community members who might have extra materials to donate so that we can rebuild the structure.”
