Family in distress after fire destroys everything
The family needs cleaning equipment and building material to clean and rebuild the house.
A Hammanskraal family said they lost everything they owned in a fire that destroyed their home last Friday morning.
Tshegofatso Maphoso (21) was sleeping in the house when the fire broke out at New Eersterust F3, near Makinta Road around 10:00, according to family member Lebogang Kubayi.
It was believed the fire started in the garage.
Kubayi said her 36-year-old sister, who has been the head of the house since their mother passed away, was at work when it happened.
“Some of the kids went to school and Maphoso was the only one left in the house when the fire started.
“Maphoso woke to hear the neighbours screaming that there’s a fire inside the house.”
She was rescued by the neighbours who tried to put out the flames.
Kubayi said the neighbours blew a whistle, calling other community members to come and assist in saving the house.

“The neighbours thought they could extinguish the fire inside the garage before it spread to the rest of the house.
“However, the fire spread despite their efforts and then they heard explosions from inside.
“The fire was massive and there was no way anyone could come near the house,” she said.
Kubayi said residents called the firefighters as they tried fighting the blaze.
“The firefighters arrived too late and the fire destroyed everything and there was nothing left to save.
“Everything inside the house was burned, including furniture and clothes.
“The family now live at their grandparents’ house at Eersterust,” she said.
Kubuyi said they need cleaning equipment to clean and rebuild the house because the kids were still young.
She said the cause of the fire was being investigated by the authorities.
