Three opposing Eersterust councillors unite to improve the area for all

The three councillors who were heated opponents for years, met at the Tshwane House on April 20 to put everything behind them and unite.

Three councillors from Eersterust, who are usually political rivals, have banded together to make the area a better place for all.

Local ward councillor Benjamin Lawrence said the 2021 local municipality elections resulted in Eersterust having three councillors: himself, Novina Pillay and Debyre Williams-Moses.

He said the community of Eersterust was derailed from flourishing for decades because of disunity within the community.

The three councillors represent different political parties. Lawrence is a member of the DA, Pillay represents ActionSA and Moses is a member of the Patriotic Alliance (PA).

The three councillors met at the Tshwane House on April 20 to put their politics behind them.

Speaking to Rekord, Moses said having voices in council representing the community as a collective will be to Eersterust’s advantage.

“This unity will see faster turnaround time on service delivery issues. Aligned processes between councillors will minimise the number of work on queries from community members,” she said.

Lawrence said the councillors uniting was important because they need to work together to change the trajectory of leadership in the community.

He said the three councillors came together for the first time to discuss the situation in Eersterust.

“During our discussions, each of us laid out our visions and desires as leaders and what we would like to achieve in the limited time that the residents have afforded us to speak on their behalf.

“We are pleased to announce our commitment to partnering up and making use of our respective political homes and offices to forward Eersterust as a united front,” Lawrence said.

“This working relationship aims to redirect our focus on what should matter to Eersterust leaders.

“This includes economic growth, consolidated focus service delivery and community upliftment,” he said.

Lawrence said they want to lead by example and encourage the rest of the community to do so.

“Together we can drive Eersterust to greater heights, with the support of all stakeholders within the community,” he concluded.
