Metro budgets almost R800-million for housing projects
The metro has appointed town planners to proceed with township establishments and approval of general plans for approximately 100 informal settlements in the next three years.
The Tshwane metro has budgeted R800-million for housing projects in the 2022/23 financial year.
“Although we are committed to providing services to existing settlements, investing in new developments and social housing projects to accommodate the growing housing demand is a top priority, said human settlements MMC Abel Tau.
Tau said the budget included R413-million for capital projects while R415-million was budgeted to drive operations of the project.
“A total of 145 informal settlements are confirmed to be in development based on high-level feasibility studies that were conducted.
“We have also appointed town planners to proceed with township establishments and approval of general plans for approximately 100 informal settlements in the next three years,” he said.
Tau said R32.5-million will be allocated to township establishments during the 2022/23 financial year.
“Our department will also focus on providing water, sanitation and the construction of roads at old townships such as Mamelodi, Soshanguve, Atteridgeville, Winterveldt, Ga-Rankuwa and many others.”
He added that the metro was under immense pressure as the demand for housing close to the city’s economic hubs was growing.
“To address this, R131.7-million has been allocated for the development of affordable rental social housing units.
“Our housing projects offer mixed units to young families and urban economically active residents.”
Tau said the target group was Tshwane residents who do not qualify for government-sponsored housing or those who do not no earn enough to qualify for home loans (monthly income between R1 500 and R15 000).
Tau said the metro was dedicated to providing dignified housing and services to residents.
