Metro phases out ambulance services

Going forward the rendering of emergency medical and ambulance services in Tshwane will be carried out by Gauteng Emergency Medical Services and other private services.

The Tshwane metro will no longer render emergency and medical services to residents as of May 15.

The metro’s emergency services department received a temporary license during the national state of disaster to deal with the Covid-19 pandemic, said MMC for community safety Grandi Theunissen.

He said the contract is, however, set to expire on May 15 and the metro will no longer be allowed to legally provide services to residents.

“Going forward the rendering of emergency medical and ambulance services in Tshwane will be carried out by Gauteng Emergency Medical Services and other private services.

“Tshwane has been the only municipality in Gauteng rendering emergency medical services since the decision to provincialise the service was taken,” he said.

Theunissen said the metro has been slowly phasing out this service over the last few months as the provincial government is set to take full responsibility for this sector going forward.

“The metro’s Emergency Services Department will, however, continue to render emergency medical treatment at all fire and rescue-related incidents.

“Emergency medical treatment means to treat and stabilise a patient while awaiting an available ambulance to transport the patient to the nearest healthcare facility,” said Theunissen.

He added that Tshwane’s Emergency Services Communication centres will redirect all medical emergency calls received on the 107 toll-free number to the 10177 provincial emergency services number, as of midnight, May 15.
