Mams West community participate in Sports Against Crime event
“Substance abuse is a serious issue among our youth and the awareness campaign will help in the never-ending fight of drugs and substance abuse.”
Residents of Naledi and Moretele View in Mamelodi West joined hands by taking part in their first annual Sports Against Crime event.
The event was organised by Mamelodi West police, CPF, Thandanani Drop Inn Centre and Women’s Brigade as part of the celebration of Freedom Day.
The event kicked off with two drum majorettes groups who walked around the streets of Naledi and Moretele View together with all the stakeholders handing out different pamphlets with safety tips on gender-based violence, substance abuse, drugs and domestic violence.
Police spokesperson Captain Johannes Maheso said the event wanted to keep children busy and away from drugs and crime.
“We have organised both sections to come and participate in different sports such as soccer and netball,” said Maheso.
He also said they also invited parents to take part in the event because they were speakers who were addressing social issues affecting young and old.
Chairperson of Mamelodi West CPF, Tebogo Mashigo said the event was aimed at “seeing a change in our youth because drugs destroy their lives”.
“Substance abuse is a serious issue among our youth and the awareness campaign will help in the never-ending fight against drugs and substance abuse,” said Mashigo.
“This is not a one-off campaign, we are still going to host more events in Mamelodi until we have all the sections in Mamelodi,” he said.
Mashigo pleaded with the Tshwane metro to revamp sports and recreational facilities to empower the youth.
“The Department of Education needs to also bring back sports, choirs and debates to keep children busy.”
The community members were also encouraged to start working with the police in fighting crime by reporting people who are selling drugs to the youth of Mamelodi.
The message of zero-tolerance against women and children was also spread on the day.
