Once in a lifetime experience for Abbotts College learner on 7de Laan set

"I learned how much thought goes into every little aspect of the show. The information I learned is invaluable and I learned that maybe I have more areas of my studies and what I can do in the industry."

A Grade 11 learner from Abbotts College in Centurion recently had the opportunity to spend a week on the set of the TV soap opera 7de Laan.

Jordyn Pieterse entered a job shadowing opportunity where participants had to submit an audition video explaining why they wanted to be part of the experience.

Only five learners were given the chance to gain first-hand professional experience in the film industry.

“I was hesitant at first, but my drama teacher advised me to enter to gain experience in the entertainment industry.

“I was blown away when I received a call to inform me that I was one of the learners selected to spend a week with the cast,” she said.

Pieterse said that the professionalism of the sets, the equipment and getting to the whole process unfold was incredible.

“Everyone was so accommodating and welcoming, even the actors. I got to see how much truly goes into making the show and learned so much about the industry. I loved every moment,” she said.

She added that it’s hard to single out one highlight.

“I was cast as an extra on two occasions and two actors made a video for my grandmother who is a huge fan of the show.

“The greatest highlight for me would be the people who taught and worked with me, and the other learners who were with me on set.”

Her plans for after school are not yet set in stone.

“I gained so much respect for the show as a whole. I became invested in the storyline during the week and now I tune in every once in a while because it feels reminiscent of the time I spent on set.

“I learned how much thought goes into every little aspect of the show. The information I learned is invaluable and I learned that maybe I have more areas of my studies and what I can do in the industry.

“I still have to choose between my interest in medicine or my passion for creativity and the arts,” she said.

Pieterse said that she shadowed a different department each day.

“I learned the inner working of these departments such as hair and makeup, extra co-ordination, dialogue coaching, wardrobe and the art department.

“I got to help finalise actor’s looks for the camera, log continuity in wardrobe and makeup, and explore the set during lunch,” she said.

“Whatever I choose, I want to ensure whatever I do will fulfil me for a lifetime.

“I discovered my true passion for drama and the industry and I hope to one day be part of the stories you see on stage and screen, whether you see me on set or just my name in the credits,” said Pieterse.
