Dumping site turned into community park
“We could no longer bear the stench coming from the dumpsite,” says Nkandla residents.
An illegal dumping site has been transformed into a community park complete with a vegetable garden by residents of a local informal settlement.
The residents of Nkandla in Mamelodi West section B3 came together recently to clean up an illegal dumping site nearby a church and the Nkandla informal settlement with their own garden tools.
“We could no longer bear the stench coming from the dumpsite,” said community representative Jabulani Golele.
“The stench was also affecting the church nearby,” said Golele.
“We were unable to open windows to enjoy fresh air because of the flies and mosquitoes.”

He added that residents were also experiencing a lot of rats roaming around their shacks.
The clean-up campaign started in the morning at the corner of Ngobeni and Malaka streets straight up to the Nkandla mobile toilets.
Golele said the main idea behind cleaning the dumpsite was to develop the area into a vegetable garden and create a community park for the children of Nkandla.
Residents were excited about the park and how it turned out.
He said the community park would benefit everyone, including small children in the area.
Golele also thanked their newly elected ward councillor for organising a TLB to clear the area.
Volunteers hoped the community park would bring development to the area as well as business opportunities such as a car wash.
They put up a net around the spot. On it was written “No Dumping” and “Fine: R250”.
They also pleaded with local businesses to help with seed donations.
