Lookout for injured Hadeda with arrow still lodged in body

The bird with was spotted by a resident in the Menlyn area on Monday afternoon.

A bird rescue organisation asked residents in the east of Pretoria to be on the lookout for an injured Hadeda with an arrow visibly sticking out of its body.

“The arrow doesn’t seem to have hit any vital organs, which is why the bird can still fly,” said Brendan Murray, the founder of Owl Rescue Centre.

“But it still needs some attention.”

The adult bird was last spotted in the Menlyn area on Monday afternoon by a resident who saw it fly into her garden.

“That wound is going to become infected and it’s going to cause it problems,” said Murray.

“We can’t get an exact location. We are just going from suburb to suburb to see if anyone has seen it.”

He said the call to assist was made on social media after the resident took a photo of the bird and posted it, tagging the organisation’s account.

Since then the team has been scouting for the bird.

“We posted on our social media to see if anyone has seen it.

“We often receive calls to assist with Hadedas that have been shot with pellet guns, bows or crossbows,” Murray said.

He urged anyone who has spotted the bird to contact them on 082 719 5463.
