Members of the Lyttelton crime prevention unit were on a routine patrol along Boeing Avenue when they spotted a Toyota FJ Cruiser parked on the side of the road, according to spokesperson Dave Miller.
The officers stopped and noticed that the occupants “were acting suspiciously and seemed very nervous”.
The police officers were soon joined by a security company who stopped to provide backup and see if everything was in order.
During a search of the vehicle, it was discovered that they had tools commonly used in cable thefts.
The suspects could not give a reasonable explanation for possessing them when questioned.
A 9mm pistol, which the suspects could not produce a valid licence for, was also found.
When the serial number on the pistol was checked, it was discovered that the firearm was reported stolen in 2021.
All three suspects were placed under arrest.
They will face charges relating to possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, as well as possession of cable theft implements.
The firearm will be sent to ballistics to verify whether it has been used in any other crimes.
The station commander of Lyttelton SAPS Brigadier Matlala has thanked the officers and private security for the good work done.
