Medical condition prevents schoolgirl from living a normal life

Schoolgirl suffering from axillary breast tissue has been placed on a waiting list, but has been told it could take months.

A 16-year-old schoolgirl from Mamelodi East was unable to attend school for several days because of her medical condition.

Tebogo Semadi, a grade 10 learner, is suffering from axillary breast tissue that needs to be surgically removed.

Her mother, Rinah Semadi (45), said she was concerned about her daughter’s health and future since she was unable to attend school like any other child.

She said her daughter suffered a lot and when the pain starts, she is unable to go to school or sleep at night.

“The school has called me on numerous occasions to come and take her to the hospital when she is in pain because she is unable to do anything,” said Semadi.

She said she has been in and out of hospitals and clinics seeking help for her daughter.

“The local clinic will provide pain killers, same as the hospital but at least at the hospital she was placed on a waiting list to surgically remove the axillary breast tissue,” said Semadi.

However, we were told that we could wait months.

“The agony and pain my daughter endures almost every day will destroy her future, even a grown-up person won’t bear the pain,” she said.

She said sometimes she wishes they could exchange the pain so that her child could live a normal life like any child out there.

“It all started with a swell above her breast on the side last year but we did not take it seriously. Later the lump started producing fluids with an unbearable smell.”

Her daughter has lost confidence and self-esteem and is behind with her schoolwork.

Semadi added she recently missed writing a school test because she woke up in pain that morning and was unable to go to school.

“Sometimes the pain can go on for almost two days in a row and she will be screaming for help.

“I am unemployed but managed to take her to a private doctor for a mammogram and we were told that she has axillary breast tissue,” she said.

“The local clinic was not helpful because they just told me that my daughter needs to change her bras to a bigger size despite seeing she was in pain.”

Semadi said her daughter desperately needs funds to go for an operation to remove the axillary breast tissue.

Anyone who wishes to help the little girl with funds for her surgery can contact her mother Rinah on 071 613 0502.
