Metro police impounds 54 taxis
“Some taxi drivers operate on a day-to-day basis without a driver’s licence.”
A total of 54 taxis were impounded in May during operations by the Tshwane metro police in the Pretoria CBD.
The taxis were impounded for not abiding by traffic laws, according to TMPD spokesperson Senior Superintendent Isaac Mahamba.

He said the first 25 taxis were impounded on Wednesday, May 4, for various offences including operating without permits, operating on the wrong routes and traffic obstruction.
On Tuesday, May 10, 29 more taxis were impounded in the CBD after law enforcement agencies identified more taxis that are deemed “not roadworthy”.
Mahamba said most of the impounded taxis transported learners to and from school every day without a permit.
“Some taxi drivers operate on a day-to-day basis without a driver’s licence,” he said.
He added that the issue of taxis operating on the wrong routes remains to be an issue in Tshwane.
With taxis transporting thousands of people daily, the TMPD want to ensure that all operating taxis are driven by licensed drivers, are roadworthy and are permitted to be operating.

Mahamba said the TMPD will continue to enforce the law in Tshwane to ensure the safety of road users and residents.
