Three new cables for Barnard Park substation
The proposed solution was to install three dedicated cables to the substation, which will be fed from Waterkloof and Die Hoewes.
Centurion residents living in Kloofsig and Lyttelton have been experiencing frequent blackouts due to continuous work being done on the Barnard Park substation.
According to ward councillor David Farquharson, a cable was failing because of the load.
“The cable has also been running at too high a temperature because of the load,” he told Rekord.
The proposed solution was to install three dedicated cables to the substation, which will be fed from Waterkloof and Die Hoewes.
“The problem is the ring cables network. The solution of upgrading the cables will be covered under the existing budget for strengthening the electricity network.”
The connection from Waterkloof will be done by May 18.
There will be an outage for a few hours when the change-over takes place.
The second cable from Die Hoewes will be installed later.

“We are often asked why it takes so long to fix outages. But when a cable fails, the fault first has to be found. It can take up to four hours to locate the fault. Then it has to be excavated and repaired and only then can a switching team re-energize.
“We have plans for increased security for our electricity infrastructure,” said Farquharson.
A tender has been awarded for technological security systems.
Farquharson said the metro has upgraded all the substations over the past few years.
“In the short term (next financial year), the focus is going to be on the cable network.”
