30 East beneficiaries receive blankets
This campaign serves to raise awareness of bullying in schools and includes information sessions with learners.
Women in the east of Pretoria donated 30 blankets to the Sungardens hospice in the east of Pretoria on Friday.
They started knitting blankets to make 67 blankets for Mandela Day (July 18) to hand out to people who are in need.
But according to the councillor of ward 82 Siobhan Muller, the plan changed as it has already started getting cold.
“We decided it is getting cold and we were not going to wait for Mandela Day.
“We started with the donations in February.”
Muller said they also donated beanies and bed socks for babies.
Hestie Gerber and Carol Bunn started the drive.
“Lynnwood Oord and Jaffa retirement are also part of the project.
“The group consists of over 60 people,” Muller said.
“A group of ladies from ward 82 and other ladies from other wards also joined us.”
Gerber said they started this project to comfort people who are suffering.

Bunn said the idea was to bring together community members to make a difference in the lives of less-fortunate people.
“It has provided an opportunity to become more aware of the lives of others and some of the difficulties they face,” said Bunn.
Muller said donations are dropped at the Hazel food market on a Saturday morning and during the week at Rogers Road.
“The biggest challenge is to get enough wool.

“The wool of each blanket costs between R450 and R500, which I think is phenomenal,” she said.
Muller said it was an ongoing event and the next batch of blankets will be delivered to Eersterust.
