Ga-Rankuwa SAPS visit local schools to tell children about their rights

The message from SAPS was clear in order for learners to fully enjoy their rights.

Ga-Rankuwa police engaged with schools to raise awareness of the rights of children on May 18.

The schools that were visited were Modiselle Primary and NM Chuene Secondary.

This was in a build-up to anticipated Child Protection Week to be observed from May 29 to June 4.

National Child Protection Week is commemorated in the country annually to raise awareness of the rights of children as articulated in the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa and Children’s Act (Act No. 38 of 2005).

The Department of Social Development, Community Safety and Health and social crime coordinator were also part of the engagement, according to police spokesperson Shimi Tsheole.

“The message from the SAPS was clear for learners to fully enjoy their rights, as articulated in the act.”

Tsheole said learners must respect one another by refraining from bullying each other.

“Bullying can lead to an unfortunate culture of violence in the society.

“The learners were further taught about their rights to be protected from neglect, abuse, violence and exploitation,” he said.

Tsheole said the learners were also made aware of gender-based violence (GBV) “which is a pandemic in our society”.

“It is important to ensure that the most vulnerable in our society do not suffer abuse.”
