High-speed chase leads to arrest in Silverton
A group of men were spotted driving a vehicle that was reported stolen in Garsfontein last month.
A 37-year-old man was arrested following a high-speed chase in Silverton on Tuesday morning.
The man and two others were spotted in Meyerspark driving a Ford Figo that was reported stolen in Garsfontein in April.
“The suspects were spotted along Erasmus Street by a Brinant security officer,” said police spokesperson Warrant Officer Isaac Mculu.
“The officer followed the vehicle.”
Mculu said the suspected robbers, who noticed that they were being followed, started shooting at the security officer.
The security officer called in backup.
“SAPS and Fidelity ADT officers came to assist,” said Mculu.
“When the suspects were cornered, they drove into a Sasol petrol station on Van Wyk Street where they bumped into another vehicle and to a halt.”
Mculu said the men got out of their vehicle and ran off in different directions.
Only one of them was arrested a few metres away. Upon searching the car, an unlicensed firearm was recovered under one of the seats.

“We also found three cellphones believed to be stolen,” he said.
“The car the suspects were driving in was also believed to have been involved in two business robberies in the past two weeks in Silverton.”
The arrested man will be appearing before the Pretoria magistrate’s court soon after being formally charged.
