Tshwane SANTACO denounce national shutdown claims
Tshwane Santaco spokesperson Salang McDonald Makata said the taxi industry has not made any plans to protest or disrupt movement on the roads.
The South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) has distanced itself from a rumoured national shutdown this Friday.
Word of a planned protest surfaced on social media following the recent hike in petrol prices.
Tshwane Santaco spokesperson Salang McDonald Makata said the taxi industry has not made any plans to protest or disrupt movement on the roads.
Makata urged commuters to refrain from skipping work as taxis will operate as normal in the Tshwane region.
Colonel Athlenda Mathe and the SAPS warned members of the public to refrain from spreading fake news as prohibiting people’s freedom of movement is a criminal offence.
“Any action aimed at contravening the law will be dealt with accordingly and within the ambit of the law.
“We, therefore, plead with members of the public to co-operate with us to ensure the safety of residents,” Mathe said.
Mathe added that law enforcement officers have already been deployed and are on high alert to prevent any form of criminality in the name of the taxi shutdown.
“The respective Provincial Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (PROVJOINTS) have been directed to ensure multidisciplinary deployments and the necessary contingency plans are in place.
“We assure members of the public that law enforcement will be executed within relevant prescripts to ensure stability in the Tshwane metro,” she said.
