Precious Blessings celebrate 10-year anniversary at Monte de Dios

“We opened our home in 2012 and it has been amazing. We have had a lot of miracle moments.”

Monte de Dios hosted a gala dinner and fundraiser for the place of safety, Precious Blessings, on Friday evening.

The home was celebrating its 10- year anniversary of providing a safe, loving and caring home for abandoned babies and toddlers.

The money that was raised during the fundraiser will go towards assisting the home.
Precious Blessings was started by husband and wife George and Heidi Versfeld of Die Wilgers in 2012.

Heidi said the reason they decided to start their home was inspired by their 8-year infertility journey.
Just as they were about to give up, they were blessed with their daughter.

“When you are in that position you become aware of unwanted babies. In 2004 when we were in Ghana, we became involved with the orphans and street children.

“I adopted two children there and when we came back to South Africa in 2012, we realised that we can continue to make a difference.

”She said they currently have five adopted children and six babies in their home.

“We opened our home in 2012 and it has been amazing. We have had a lot of miracle moments. “Today (Friday) we also had an adoption placement, which is huge for us.”

Heidi said the money they will receive through the gala dinner will go a long way in assisting the home.

She said some of the children in their care are living with disabilities and that brings a lot of additional costs.

“Baby expenses are huge if you look at things like nappies and formula. “Currently, we do not receive any state grants for any of our children.

“There isn’t always space at government hospitals, so a lot of the money that is donated will go towards maintaining a level of care.

“Each child that comes into our home, we want to treat as if it’s our own. As parents, we want what’s best for our children and that’s what we want for these children.

“The money is also going to go towards running costs.”
