Farewell after 23 years but, not for good
“I want to thank everyone so that when they don’t see me at this corner anymore they won’t think I have passed on. I am still available. I am just going to rest in my home.”
A painter who has serviced many residents of Pretoria is saying farewell to all his loyal customers after 23 years.
Speaking to Rekord, George Shiburi (71) of KwaMhlanga has been painting Pretoria from the corner of Rubenstein Drive and Jacques Street in Moreleta Park since 2002.
“Thank you for the support over 23 years of standing on this corner,” said Shiburi.
Friday, June 10 was the last day locals would see Shiburi at his chosen spot but they can still hire him for his painting services.
“I’m no longer going to be standing here,” said Shiburi.
Shiburi shared with Rekord how he came to his decision.
“Since the coronavirus emerged, I have offered my services from this corner, but were afraid because I heard that this virus can affect the elderly severely,” he said.
“It is also getting too cold here so, I felt it would be best that I say my goodbyes and stay home. Those who need me will call me and I will avail myself.”
Shiburi is grateful to the residents of Pretoria east beyond measure.
“The people in this area have helped me tremendously. Even when there was a death in my family, they would help me financially for the funerals,” he said.
“I want to thank everyone so that when they don’t see me at this corner anymore they won’t think I have passed on. I am still available. I am just going to rest in my home.”
Shiburi has worked for so many people over the years he cannot even count. Some have also passed away. However, one particular individual has a special place in his heart.
“Jacques Barnard is one man that I am especially appreciative to. When the coronavirus emerged he would help me financially every month without me working for him,” he said.
“There isn’t a month he has missed… to this day he is still generous.
“I pray that God will bless him.”
Shiburi has two children and two grandchildren who are all unemployed. He is the breadwinner of his family.
“I would like to ask the residents of Pretoria east to continue helping me find painting jobs. Although I am elderly I am still strong enough to work. I also have young boys who are willing and more than able to work.
“I need the work because the cost of living is high. My pension grant won’t sustain us.”
