Nine arrested for ‘drug possession’
The suspects were found in possession of suspected nyaope and dagga on Wednesday.
Nine people were nabbed for possession of drugs suspected to be worth R3 000 in Soshanguve Block FF, V, T, X and P.
The suspects, aged between 21 and 37, were arrested by Rietgat police on Wednesday, November 11, for possession of suspected dagga and nyaope.
These arrests came after the arrests of four suspected drug dealers at the weekend in the Rietgat policing precinct.
Rietgat police commander Brigadier Molatelo Maphoto lauded the officers for their continued fight against drug peddling and abuse within the community.
“We remain resolute and unflinching in the fight against drugs and drug abuse. We will not rest until our streets are cleared of all drug users and drug dealers in our community,” said Maphoto.
Rietgat police spokesperson Captain Stephen Maluleka said drugs within their policing precinct are a thorn in the flesh.
He added that drugs indirectly contribute to crime in the community, more specifically burglary.
“Most of the burglaries are done by people under the influence of drugs because they’re looking for things to sell for a quick fix,” he said.
He said arresting drug dealers and suspects in possession of drugs was a way to join premier Panyaza Lesufi and MEC Mbali Hlophe’s new initiative to clean up drugs in the communities.
“We are on the side of the premier. We are helping them our way by dealing with drug dealers and users,” he said.
All the suspects will appear in the Soshanguve magistrate’s court in due course.
Members of the community are urged to report all the criminal activities in the area without fear or favour.
The Rietgat police commander can be anonymously contacted on 082 455 8236, 071 624 6250 or 08600 10111.
