Memorial for search and rescue K9, Jett
The memorial is a public event that will take place next week Wednesday at Ark Walk Park in Chartwell.
A memorial has been planned to celebrate the life of Jett, the search and rescue K9 that fell down a manhole in Hartbeesspruit, Kilner Park, on Sunday, November 27. The tragic incident has been widely reported and many messages received.
After four days of searching, Jett’s body was found at the Zeekoegat sewage treatment facility on Wednesday evening around 21:00.
Jett, part of the Healthy Hound missing pet search and rescue unit, was tracking a missing Jack Russellterrier, Freddie.
Freddie was found on Monday night.
Jett had tracked the Jack Russel to the reeds in the Hartbeesspruit nature area, Kilner Park when he fell into an open drain. His handler tried to save Jett, sustaining minor injuries in the process. She was unable to reach him in time before he was swept away.
Karlene Treunicht of Healthy Hound told Rekord that they were overwhelmed by the amount of support and messages they received during the search for Jett.
“We are incredibly grateful and blessed with all the support and messages from everyone.”
The memorial will take place on Wednesday, December 7 at 16:00 at Ark Walk Park in Chartwell, a place that Jett’s handlers said was one of his favourites.
Other service dogs will be in attendance, but Healthy Hound did request that attendees not bring their own dogs.
Jett loved teddies and attendees are welcome to bring donations of teddies and dog toys.
“The memorial is for people to come show their respects, but most of all for us as Healthy Hound to say thank you to Jett and how much he means to us.”
