40 arrested in Soshanguve over the weekend
A 40-year-old woman was arrested and charged with perjury after lying to police officers.
Rietgat police arrested about 40 suspects for various criminal offences in Soshanguve over the weekend.
Police spokesperson Captain Stephen Maluleka said the arrest were for various offences including possession of drugs, varied assault charges, armed robbery and attempted murder.
Other charges included carjacking, possession of a stolen motor vehicle and theft from motor vehicles, malicious damage to property, rape, shoplifting, illegal immigration, perjury, driving under the influence of alcohol and contravention of a protection order.
One of the suspects, a 40-year-old woman, was arrested on Saturday after lying to police officers.
“According to the information received, the suspect approached the police on January 13, and reported that she was assaulted by her boyfriend who subsequently pointed a firearm at her,” said Maluleka.
Sergeants Innocent Simali and Thabo Rathwakga investigated the claims and took the suspect to the boyfriend.
“Upon realising the seriousness of the case, the woman confessed that she lied about being assaulted and threatened with a firearm. She cited that she wanted the case to have more weight by lying about the incident,” he said.
She was charged with perjury and made a brief appearance in the Soshanguve magistrate’s court on Monday, January 23.
“The community must refrain from opening cases under false pretences as a form of settling personal scores,” he said.
“This is not just a waste of the police’s time, but as this case shows, has legal implications.”
Station commander Brigadier Molatelo Maphoto praised his station’s officers for their efforts.
“I am very grateful that more boots on the ground are yielding positive results. The officers are selflessly putting the safety of the community first,” said Brigadier Maphoto.
All the other suspects will appear in the Soshanguve magistrate’s court soon.
