Mayoral election: Coalition at ‘full strength’ after terminated councillors replaced

ActionSA has called up three “long-standing” members to solidify its voting bloc in the Tshwane council on Wednesday to contest the mayoral elections.
This was after it terminated three councillors this month, whom it believed it had worked with opposition parties.
The political party and its coalition members staged a walkout during a special council sitting on March 17 where a new Tshwane mayor was due to be elected.
ActionSA Gauteng provincial chairperson Funzi Ngobeni said ActionSA had concluded its candidate selection processes following a full review of its PR list in Tshwane.
“This follows the termination of membership of councillors believed to have been working with the ANC and EFF.”
Funzi further pleaded with its coalition partners DA, VF Plus, IFP and ACDP to further clean their political agencies.
“Our coalition partners also need to ensure they undertake similar actions to those undertaken by ActionSA as it pertains to their councillors who have been found to have voted for ANC/EFF sponsored candidates.”
Ngobeni said the candidates to fill the vacant spots in the party were Mark Boikanyo, Hluphi Gafane and Derick Mahlangu.
He said the three candidates would ensure that the party and coalition were at full strength ahead of the election that could see DA candidate mayor Cilliers Brink as mayor.
“As a consequence of the filling of these council seats, ActionSA will return to its full complement of councillors ahead of Wednesday’s council meeting to elect the mayor for Tshwane.
“It is critical for the Tshwane metro to be stabilised under the leadership of a coalition that has a majority awarded to it by the residents of Tshwane and not the buying and selling of votes.”
Ngobeni said the councillors were confirmed by the IEC.
