Manhunt after 12 robbers in police uniforms try to break into police safe in Silverton

Twelve men impersonating police officers entered the building and used explosives to break open the safe. A shootout occurred and a police officer was shot.

Police launched a manhunt after 12 men wearing police uniforms entered a Silverton police building in an apparent attempt to steal drugs on Sunday evening, July 16.

According to police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, the suspects were travelling in a white Ford Ranger bakkie with no registration.

“The suspects gained entry into the building and attempted to break open a safe inside,” Mathe said.

“Explosives were used to open the safe containing confiscated drugs. The attempt was unsuccessful.”

A shootout between police patrolling the area and the suspects ensued. A police officer was shot.

The police stopped the suspects from gaining entry to the safe. They fled the scene empty-handed in the bakkie.

Mathe said the injured officer was taken to hospital.

She added that police have set aside R25-million in the coming financial year for security upgrades at all its buildings nationwide.
