Two Pretoria men sentenced to 7 years for armed robbery

The duo arrested in 2020, has now been sentenced to seven years direct imprisonment, notwithstanding the three years they have already spent in prison.

Two Pretoria men were sentenced to seven years in jail for robbing an unsuspecting victim of his bicycle at knifepoint in 2020.

According to MMC for community safety Grandi Theunissen, the two men were arrested by the Tshwane metro police’s cable theft unit.

“On the evening of August 28, 2020, a victim approached the cable theft unit on patrol after he had been robbed of his bicycle at knifepoint by three suspects.”

Theunissen said the unit jumped into action to assist the victim and chased the suspects.

“Two were apprehended while the third managed to flee. Both the bicycle and the weapon used to commit the crime were recovered.”

Theunissen said the men had been in custody since their arrest, and received no bail.

“The duo has now been sentenced to seven years’ direct imprisonment, notwithstanding the three years they have already spent behind bars.”

Theunissen commended the officers involved in the arrest and highlighted the value chain that was set in motion thereafter.

“Arrests are one thing, but if the paperwork and investigation thereafter are not handled with due care, they might not lead to successful convictions, and suspects simply walk free and continue to commit crime,” he said.

He added that cooperation between the TMPD, the police and the National Prosecuting Authority was key to a successful conviction.

“This is the good type of police work that we all want to see more of.”

He said TMPD members who were tasked with the protection of city infrastructure, did not hesitate when a resident needed their help with something different.

“It is this type of selfless, adaptive and brave service to our residents that I want to see from all TMPD officials,” he said.

He urged residents to report crime to the TMPD on 012 358 7095/7096 or tmpdcomplaints@tshwane.gov.za or the cable theft unit on 012 358 1550.
