Tshwane to enhance security after power failure results in e-commerce system fault

A device in Centurion failed due to a power failure, and the rerouting to a Pretoria North backup was moot because of a power failure there too.

The Tshwane metro will look into enhancing its security features so it does not experience similar hiccups that leave clients unable to purchase electricity.

The short-lived fault of the prepaid vending system began on November 26 but by the week ending December 1, it had been resolved.

The system was unable to connect to the outside network for clients to purchase electricity, which led to frustrations and anger.

According to Tshwane spokesperson Lindela Mashigo, a device that provides extra security for data failed to function.

“The security module based in Centurion data centre failed as a result of last week’s substation power failure. Then the rerouting of traffic to a Pretoria North-based security module was affected by the power failure in that area resulting in an inability to generate vending tokens.

The city is currently procuring additional security modules as part of preventative action for future occurrences.”
