Learners rushed to Tshwane medical facilities in another north school transport accident

An eyewitness says the wheel at the nose of the bus gave out and caused the bus to steer off the road.

Scores of Pretoria learners had to be rushed to emergency medical facilities for observation in Kameeldrift on Thursday, February 8.

The school bus they were travelling in to school had veered off the road following mechanical failure on Roux Road in Kameeldrift West close to Laerskool Kameeldrift.

It is believed 54 learners were involved, however, the number of those treated remains unverified.

Gauteng EMS spokesperson Annikie Lelaka said her medical dispatch team was called to the scene at 07:20.

She said Gauteng EMS transported all the children on the bus for observation to Pretoria West hospital.

No serious injury was reported.

“Gauteng EMS responded to the bus accident. All learners were treated and transported to Tshwane district, Pretoria West and Kalafong hospitals.

“They were all walking around at the scene, no critical patient.”

According to an eyewitness on the scene, the bus suffered mechanical damage when a wheel gave way and the bus veered off the road.

In Soshanguve a day before, on February 7, 10 learners were transported to local health facilities after their scholar transport crashed in Kameeldrift.

According to Tshwane emergency services (EMS), the accident was reported at 06:44.

EMS spokesperson Deputy Chief Charles Mabaso said 10 patients were treated then transported to Clinic 3, Botshilo and Dr George Mukhari hospitals.

Mabaso said the patients were admitted with injuries ranging from minor to critical.

“The one transported to Dr George Mukhari was in a critical but stable condition while the was transported to Botshilo was stable. Eight were transported to Clinic 3 with minor to moderate injuries.”

On February 1, a Modiselle primary school Grade 6 boy learner in Ga-Rankuwa tragically lost his life in his scholar transport accident.

Gauteng education MEC Matome Chiloane has had to implore drivers to be extra careful with learners’ safety.

The tragic incident occurred in the afternoon as learners were being taken home.

Chiloane alleged the learner fell off the bus and its rear wheels ran him over.

“Police are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding this incident.

Indeed, this is terribly saddening news. School transport is an initiative that forms part of our critical interventions to alleviate pressure off parents. As such, we expect our learners to be safely transported to school and back home,” he said.
