TMPD shuts down spaza shops for operating without permits in Lotus Garden

The operations followed complaints by the community.

The Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) conducted a by-law operation in Lotus Gardens following complaints from community members about a bottle labeled Coca-Cola that contained a grape drink sold by spaza shops.

TMPD spokesperson Senior Superintendent Isaac Mahamba, said the spaza shops selling this drink had caused an outrage from the community.

Mahamba said upon inspection of these spaza shops, with the Department of Health, expired food was found and destroyed, and the spaza shops were closed.

“The TMPD is determined to serve and protect the city of Tshwane residents in all aspects,” Mahamba said, adding that four spaza shops were inspected.

“All four were found operating without permits, they were closed pending their application for trading licenses,” he said.

He said samples of the food and beverages were taken for testing and to confirm if they were from a valid supplier.

The chief of TMPD Yolanda Faro met with community members and assured them that TMPD is investigating these spaza shops.

Mahamba said Faro mentioned to the residents that joint operations with the Department of Health and other role players will be conducted continuously.

“TMPD is taking the sale and distribution of these food products seriously.”
