Noweto stations indicate an increase in contact crimes
Contact crimes include crimes committed against people including rape, assault and robbery.
Police stations in Noweto have shown increases in contact crimes in the latest quarterly crime stats released by Police Minister Bheki Cele for the 2023/24 financial year last Friday.
The statistics indicate the number of crimes reported to the country’s 1 163 police stations from October to December 2023.
Ga-Rankuwa
Contact crimes (crimes against people) saw an increase of 10.8% this quarter.
Murder counts increased by five, with eight cases being reported and sexual offences increased by seven counts as 24 cases were reported.
Nine cases of assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH) were reported and common assault cases rose by 24.3% (111 up to 138).
Common robberies increased by two counts up to 22 cases reported this quarter and robberies with aggravating circumstances decreased by 8.8% (80 cases down to 73).
Four more rape cases were reported, bringing the total to 18 and five sexual assault cases were filed as well.
No attempted sexual offences were reported but one contact sexual offence was reported.
Carjackings decreased by several counts from 21 cases down to 14 and nine robberies at residential premises took place, while 12 robberies at non-residential premises were recorded.
No bank or CIT robberies have taken place in the past five quarters, though three truck hijackings and arson cases were recorded.
Malicious damage to property cases decreased by 22.7% (66 down to 51).
Nineteen cases of burglary at non-residential premises were recorded and there was an increase of 8.3% at residential premises with 52 cases.
No stock theft cases have been reported in the past three quarters, while 20 counts of theft out of or from motor vehicle cases have been reported for the past two quarters.
Theft of motor vehicle and motorcycle cases increased by 2 counts (now 6) and all thefts not mentioned elsewhere increased by 26.0% (123 up to 155).
Commercial crimes reported increased by 17 counts (now 31) and five fewer counts of shoplifting were recorded (16). Police received reports of nine cases of kidnapping, which was 11 less than previously and serious crimes reported by the community increased by 11.2% from 658 cases to 732.
Crimes detected as a result of police action decreased by 42 counts down to 43 cases detected in total for the third quarter.
Police detected two counts of illegal firearm and ammunition as they did in the last quarter and 19 fewer counts of drug-related crimes were detected, bringing that total to 41.
No driving under the influence (DUI) of drugs or alcohol cases were detected in this quarter, compared to 23 in the previous quarter.
No sexual offences as a result of police action have been reported by Ga-Rankuwa police in the past five quarters.
Mabopane
Mabopane police station reported an increase of 7.8% in contact crimes. Sexual offences increased by 34 and 15 attempted murder counts were recorded, one more than the last quarter.
Robberies with aggravating circumstances decreased by 9.7% (176 cases down to 159) and common assault cases increased by 10.5% (143 up to 158). Common robbery remained constant, with 30 cases being reported in this quarter and the previous.
Assault with intent to cause GBH cases rose by 34.6% (143 up to 158) and rape cases grew by five counts up to 23 reported.
Eight more counts of sexual assault were recorded in this quarter, bringing the total to 10. One attempted sexual offence and no contact sexual offences were reported.
Carjackings decreased by six counts to 35 cases and robberies at non-residential premises decreased by 21 counts down to 11 cases.
Robberies at non-residential premises increased by 14 counts up to 24. No bank or CIT robberies took place this quarter and police reported 200 truck hijackings.
Two counts of arson were reported and 75 malicious damage to property cases, a two-count increase from last year.
Burglary at non-residential premises increased by a single count of up to 15 cases and at a residential place increased by 8.5% (94 up to 10).
Theft of motor vehicle and motorcycle cases decreased by four counts to 10, theft out of vehicles increased by 10 counts up to 32 and no stock theft cases were reported, indicating a six-count drop.
Seven fewer counts of shoplifting were reported for a total of 16 cases and all thefts not mentioned elsewhere decreased by 11.1% (134 down to 119). Commercial crime increased by 76% (30 up 53) and serious crimes reported by the community increased by 0.5%. Kidnapping decreased by 11 counts down from 33 and crime detected as a result of police action decreased by 31.4%.
Detected illegal firearm and ammunition possession crimes decreased by two counts from five and 26 fewer counts of DUI were recorded from the 28 in the last quarter. No sexual offences as a result of police action have been reported in this quarter or the previous one.
Soshanguve
The Soshanguve SAPS also reported an increase in contact crimes of 7.2% with attempted murder cases increasing by eight counts up to 16 cases reported.
Assault with intent to cause GBH increased by 23.8% (80 cases up to 99) and cases of common assault increased by 18.1% (166 up to 196). Common robberies increased by 6 counts (now 36) and murder cases decreased by 5 counts (now 4) while sexual offences decreased by 3 (now 28).
Cases of robbery with aggravating circumstances decreased by 12.2%, from 164 cases down to 144.
Three fewer rape cases (now 22) were reported this quarter and sexual assault remained at 5 for this quarter and the previous. No contact sexual offences have been reported in the past five quarters.
Carjackings decreased by four counts, down to 27 cases reported and robberies at residential premises decreased by 13 counts to 11 cases reported.
Two fewer robberies at non-residential premises were recorded this quarter, now standing at 22.
One CIT robbery case was reported, as well as one truck hijacking, though no bank robberies or cases of arson were reported in the past five quarters.
Malicious property damage decreased by 19.2% (79 cases down to 63). The amount of burglaries at non-residential premises recorded remains the same at 22 for two quarters. Burglaries at residential premises received a decrease of 10.7% (112 down to 100) and theft out of or from motor vehicle cases increased by 33.3% (45 counts up to 60).
Theft of a motor vehicle or motorcycle decreased by three counts for a total of 13 cases reported.
All theft not mentioned elsewhere decreased by 5.5% (184 down to 172) and commercial crime decreased by five counts (26) while 76 counts of shoplifting were reported. Serious crimes reported by the community increased by 0.4% up to 1056 cases from 1052. Kidnapping cases increased by two counts up to 13 and crimes detected as a result of police action increased by 82.3%.
Detected drug-related crimes increased by 30.2% (53 up to 69) and detected DUIs increased by 270.6% (17 cases up to 63). One sexual offence was detected as a result of police action and so were 11 cases of illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.
