Police said an arrest has been made in the brutal murders of three monks at a church in Cullinan. Here is the latest.

An arrest has been made in the brutal murders of three monks at a church in Cullinan.

Police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi confirmed on Wednesday that a 35-year-old man had been arrested and is expected to appear before Cullinan Magistrate’s Court on 14 March 2024.

“All three victims were found with stab wounds, while the fourth victim that survived alleged that he was hit by an iron rod on his hand before fleeing and hiding in one of the rooms.”

She said the brutal murders happened at a church in Cullinan on Tuesday.

According to Nevhuhulwi, the suspect/s reportedly left the scene without taking any valuable items or properties from their place.

“The motive of murders is unknown at this stage.”

Anyone with information that can assist police investigation is requested to contact Cullinan police station at 012 734 0751 or the Crime Stop Line at 08600 10111. Anonymous tip-offs can also be reported on MySapsApp and can be downloaded to any smartphone. All information received will be treated as strictly confidential.

Meanwhile, the Coptic Orthodox Church issued a statement regarding the brutal triple murders.

The attack resulted in the martyrdom (deaths) of the three monks:

-The Monk Hegumen Takla El-Samuely (deputy of the Diocese of South Africa)
-The Monk Yostos Ava Markos
-The Monk Mina Ava Markos

“The Church expresses its deep anguish over the occurrence of such a tragic incident, extends its sincere condolences to the families of the three monks, and is full of confidence that only the merciful and just God can grant comfort and reveal the truth.”
